Five Star Review! As an avid follower of The Braille series, I couldn’t wait to read the next instalment from J A Kerr. Book 3 doesn’t disappoint! With increasingly complex storylines and clever introductions to fresh characters, you are taken on a roller coaster of a ride; experiencing contradictory emotions as the book gathers pace. Definitely darker than the first two books, Kerr manages to balance romance with danger, and offers the reader fascinating insight into “edgier” elements of sexual desire. Braille club die hards will enjoy the twists and turns of familiar relationships however “Undone” takes them to another level, setting up a tantalising finale that will keep you guessing! Great read, highly recommend! – Marie Lynch.

Author Bio:

Author Pic.

I was born in the spring of 1967 at Paisley’s Ross Hospital in Scotland and grew up in Glasgow. I was an office administrator and latterly a recruitment consultant before marrying and relocating to The Netherlands with her husband. After two years, I moved to Cheshire where my first child was born and returned to work part-time. My final relocation took me back to my home town of Glasgow where I welcomed the arrival of my second child. I raised my family whilst harbouring dreams of becoming a writer. In September 2013, I took the plunge and started my first book.

When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create something that mirrored exactly the kind of books I like to read. My top picks are always originals featuring strong male and female protagonists with attitude. The Braille Club Series books are a great mix of genres. Although sensuality plays a big part, there is also intrigue and a touch of thriller.
I love to connect.

The Alternative Romance Writer

I have decided to brand myself as the “alternative romance writer”. Even since I got my first publishing contract I have been struggling with the fact that my romances seem a little lost among the ocean of rather spicy (read: hot hot hot) novels out there. Every time I post a teaser for my rather mild love story in a Facebook promotion blog I am intimidated by those other teasers around me; there are practically naked people, some making lewd gestures, others in the thralls of a very intimate moment, others sporting snippets from the novel that would make my mother have a heart attack. Amidst all this is my love story with allusions to Cinderella and ethereal feelings that cannot be described in a physical way. I feel very out of place.

On the other hand I don’t fit with the sweet romance crowd either. My romances are mild but they do contain enough sexual content that totally cuts me off from sweet romance sites. I was told that in no uncertain ways by a popular blogger who refused to review my book. “You book doesn’t belong here,” were the words she used. And I agree with her.

So where does my sweet and spicy story belong? Nowhere, I guess.

woman-reading-887274_1280

As a member of a minority (sort of) and a female I refuse to accept my wonderful little romances don’t belong anywhere, so I am creating a whole new sub-genre; the alternative romances. This is how I will sell it:

You love romance. You love everything about it; the dreaminess of it all, that first touch, the first kiss, the whole swooniness (I know that’s not a word, just roll with it) in the process of falling in love and be loved back. But you want to go a little further. You want to explore and find out how it felt the first time they made love, the first time they lay together, legs and arms entwined. How did they feel? What were they thinking? What made them swoon in ecstasy?

You want some details but you think anatomically-correct words kill the mood. Or worse, the vernacular for certain more intimate parts of the body just don’t do it for you at all. You want the physical act wrapped up in poetry, vague enough that your imagination can fill in the blanks, but not so vague you have to go look it up in a sex manual. You’re definitely not interested in how big the male’s genitals are or which finger exactly he used to do whatever. You want the dream, the rather misty idea of the act, the romance.

read-369040_1280

If this is what you look for in a romance (on top of all the other plot themes be it suspense, fantasy, comedy…) I am your author. Look me up on Amazon and make sure you sign up for my newsletter so you can keep up with the news of my swoon-worthy upcoming romantic fantasy (okay, that was a crass commercial plug but a girl needs to sell her books).

Before I lose you (if I haven’t already) I have a question for you? What do you think? Do you think I’m delusional and there is no market for my romances? Do I hold a prayer in this business? What do you want to see in a romance? Comment to your heart’s content, dear readers. I dare you!

Challenging Myself

All writers have their quirks. If we didn’t we wouldn’t be human, right?  I don’t normally spend a lot of time analyzing why I do things the way I do; what does my writing process look like? Why do I write across so many sub-genres?

After I signed my second publishing contract I received a form from the publisher with a questionnaire of sorts about the novel to help with the creation of a cover. One of the questions caught me by surprise. They asked me what symbols I had used in my narrative and their meanings. My first instinct was to say I didn’t have any, but the more I thought the more symbolism I found in my own writing. It was a real eye-opener. Sort of like getting to know your first love all over again.

heart-1483358_1280

I learned that I am a much deeper writer than I gave myself credit for. I couldn’t believe the meaning behind my choices for that particular novel. It inspired me to think about my writing process and the reason why I do things the way I do.

I realized, for instance, that I have been challenging myself with each novel I write. Since my first book was published, I have written two more romances and am in the process of writing a third. They are all different, the only common thread being the focus on love as the force that always saves the day.

WWAHTCBannerMystery

For the We Will Always Have the Closet I wrote in two POVs and challenged myself to write a mystery with a surprise or two in store. I was not sure I could pull it off, but I did.

Then, Desert Jewel took over my world with its luscious jungles, magical deities, and flying lizards. Here the challenge was to write a magical romantic fantasy that managed to feel real and able to pull at your heart strings. I also wanted a diverse cast. Check!

DesertJewelHTPAd

My third one (in its last edits), Loved You Always, is a romantic comedy (with a healthy dose of suspense). I wanted to challenge myself to write in the first person POV which had always been hard for me. Imagine my surprise when I discovered I love it and can’t wait to do it again. Diverse cast? Check!

Finally my current project, Heart’s Prey, a dystopian romance. Yes, you heard it correctly. I’m not even sure that’s a real subgenre. Challenge? Three different POVs, a dying world comprised of a society based on castes and, yes you guessed it, a diverse cast.

What’s next? I have an idea dancing around in my head, but you can be sure of one thing; I will challenge myself to write something new to me and hopefully to my readers. And I will fall in love all over again.

What reviewers are saying about The Braille Club
Undone

IMG_2972

I think it is difficult for an author to maintain a high standard in any series but especially erotic writing as it is important not to become too repetitive with the sexual adventures of the main characters. This author has definitely succeeded with this book, maintaining the excitement in book 3 of the series by introducing new characters and also quite a dark plot, which culminates in “heart in the mouth moments” in an ending worthy of any thriller! The sensual side of the Braille club story remains strong and there is again great variety in the characters partaking in the pleasures of the club. The descriptions of their sexual adventures are highly erotic, all the more so because the author is always focusing on the emotions of the characters as much as the intimate acts. The quality writing elevates the book well above the average book to be found in this genre and I recommend it strongly to anyone who likes to have their senses aroused.”

Serendipity and Vermeer

We went on a writing marathon day. I thought at first it was the same thing we often do during NaNoWriMo; a whole day dedicated to just sitting down and writing. I was very wrong (or at least 95% wrong). Yes, writing marathon day is about writing as much as you can, but it is also about walking, visiting, learning, and even socializing.

This event was organized by the NVWP (Northern Virginia Writing Program) Invitational Summer Institute that I am participating in. We all met at the historical town of Fredericksburg, Virginia with the goal of wondering around town, writing our thoughts as they ebbed and flowed.

I started the day by myself, frantically searching for that quaint little bookshop that sported a great coffee shop. But alas! It was no more. Instead, there is now a very nice used books store with great little nooks and crannies inviting a reader or a writer to spend some time in. I accepted the invitation and sat for a while, looking around me and writing. I had sat close to the Art books and my wandering eye immediately latched on to a big book about Vermeer.

I am known in the Facebook world as “The Girl with the Pearl Earring” because I use that painting as my profile picture. A couple weeks ago I even had a gentleman compliment me on how beautiful I was. I had to control my urge to thank him and tell him the girl in that painting has been dead for quite some time. But I digress…

earring

The point is I absolutely love Vermeer (more even than Da Vinci, my art/science idol). I don’t think there is a single painting of his I don’t like. His art is so serene, it’s like visual yoga. Years ago, when I volunteered as an art docent for Kitsap County Schools in Washington, I taught a lesson using the Milk Maid as the focal point. As I was preparing the lesson, a sense of calm came over me. Looking at the gentle light coming through the window and the young milk maid preparing things for the day ahead, you could almost hear the sound of silence, that magical sound that envelops the early morning world.

milkmaid

When I was a child I liked waking up before everyone else. When the moon was still holding on to its supremacy over the sun. When the light was reduced to faint tendrils lacking the power to break the darkness yet. I sat at the window and watched the world wake up. One light here, another there. The first train of the day rolling on its tracks, early workers walking silently to the train station, a few early worshipers climbing the long staircase to the church. All was quiet. All was well with the world in that silent moment. Serendipity.

COPPER LILIES

Genre: NA Coming of Age
Date of Publication: February 9, 2016

In 1986, twenty-three-year-old country girl Nora Brown decides it’s time for a change…

Complacent and bored with her life in rural Oklahoma, Nora leaves her bigoted father and all she’s ever known to pursue a new life in San Francisco. At the height of the AIDS epidemic, Nora, a registered nurse, believes she can be an asset to the community. Bunking in a tiny apartment with a longtime friend, Nora secures a job within a large hospital and begins volunteer work for an organization that cares for those afflicted with the disease.

She is soon faced with the horrors of AIDS—a reality she wasn’t quite prepared for…

Just as the courageous group of caregivers and volunteers have their emotional strength depleted to the point of no return, the group rallies together and pushes forward, remembering their mission—if they aren’t there for these people, who will be?

Nora wasn’t expecting to find him here, to “fall in love among the ashes…”

Along her journey, she meets a diverse community of lionhearted survivors. And then there’s Donald, another volunteer who fights alongside those with dwindling hope. Nora and Donald grow closer as the war on HIV rages around them.

They watch their friends waste to nothing, yet no answers are being offered. The only comfort is the solace they find in each other. After months of hardships, another crippling loss shakes the foundation of Nora’s faith.

Their struggle is not only about HIV/AIDS—but about how the nation responds, and the humanistic choice to be unsung heroes.

“A beautifully written reminder that draws attention to a chronic disease that still needs to be fought on the front lines as stigma/judgment remain.” -Amy Nelson, MPH, CHES HIV/AIDS Educator

EXCERPT #1

I was lucky I had him. I didn’t move to San Francisco in search of love. I would frown upon someone for falling in love among ashes. Perhaps I wasn’t actively seeking love; rather, longevity. It seemed nothing was solidified; nothing was guaranteed to return a smile the following day. Even if it were not my pain, per se, to simply witness the pain of loss from afar was enough to plummet my ailing psyche back into the pit it was attempting to crawl out of. Donald was my rope. A thin rope at first, but our threads were growing in number. I had to be sure I didn’t hang myself. After spending the rest of the day together, Donald and I ended our day’s adventure in the confinements of his bedroom. He laid me down on his bed, gently kissing my neck, and I knew without a doubt that the interaction would go no further than heated kissing and clothed entanglement. I made that abundantly clear prior to his closing of the bedroom door. There would be no raunchy stories for Gwen to salivate over the following morning. I didn’t feel dirty, and for once the oppression of guilt momentarily subsided. I was allowed to find mild pleasure without feeling disgraceful or distasteful. His touch brought a rush similar to the feeling I’d experienced on country Oklahoma roads with local high school all-stars a few years prior, but there was something much more. The physical effects he had on my body were coupled with the idea that he might be something solid. That he might be there day after day.

That he might not fade away.

 “You’re beautiful,” he whispered.

“You’re hairy,” I replied hastily, evoking a chuckle. “You’re beautiful too.”

“Beautiful?” He momentarily halted the tongue massage on my neck.

 “Handsome. Hairy and handsome.”

 “And a distraction?”

The question caught me off guard. Initially I assumed he’d be little more than that, a distraction. A distraction from everything going on around me. Gradually, I had accepted the idea that exploring realms beyond friendship and preoccupation with this

gentleman was something I could be okay with.

“No.Yes and no. What am I?”

“A girl,” he said playfully, scanning my face for hints.

“You’re not just a distraction. Something to take my mind off of Buddies and the hospital, yes; but I like you.”

 “Me too.”

 “You too?”

“I like you. But you’re my escape. Sometimes I feel like there’s no escape. I can either close my eyes and see their faces, see Toby’s face, or I can see yours. I miss him. Maybe I miss him too much.”

His eyes were dry yet flooded with pain. There was no way the average farm boy from rural Texas could digest losing one of his closest friends in such a short

period of time. Had he been back home and his buddy been killed in an accident, Donald would have had monumental support and guidance throughout the grief process. Here, everyone had a Toby, a Logan, all of our friends were losing friends. Attempting to share feelings with our social group would only add turmoil to their grief-stricken lives.

“I can be that. I’d like to be that,” I muttered as I kissed him.

The passion left our fingertips quicker than it mounted in them. He ran the tip of his index finger under my eye, tracing it to my earlobe. It was as if we bottled the explosive emotions for another night and took comfort in companionship. I wasn’t trying to be a hero, but I certainly wasn’t trying to write a love story either. At this point, I was comfortable moving through this experience with this person and allowing myself a temporary reprieve from my constant over analyzing—whatever happens, happens—just let it be, and it will be.

Bradon Nave was born and raised in rural Oklahoma. He attended a small country school during junior high and high school, and graduated with only three people in his class. After graduate school, he decided to devote his spare time to his passion of writing. Bradon currently lives in Piedmont, Oklahoma, with his wife and two young children.
When he’s not writing, he loves running, being with friends and family, and being outdoors.
